What is Hypnotherapy

One question I am often asked is "what is hypnotherapy". The best way I have found to explain it is this, hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy where a person achieves a deep level of relaxation where their mind can accept suggestions in order to make changes to their lives.

Often when people think of hypnotherapy, they think of stage hypnotism and they can't be further from the truth. At any point during the session, you can get up and leave the session, you are always in control. This extends to the suggestions that are given. If you disagree with the suggestions you won't accept them, which means no one can tell you to do anything you don't want to do. This means that there is no making you cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog.

The suggestions that are used come in different forms, which I will discuss in future posts, but for now, I will try to explain how they can make a difference. If you can imagine that your brain is divided into your conscious and subconscious mind, with the conscious mind responsible for taking in what you see, hear, smell and feel right now and your subconscious mind being responsible for storing all of your past experiences, memories and feelings.

The conscious mind tends to be logical, rational and controllable, and your subconscious is emotive, subjective and you have little or no control. One big difference between the two is that the subconscious is malleable.

When we receive information, it enters our conscious mind and is then compared with what is stored in our subconscious. If the information matches, then we accept it. If not, then we disregard it. To give an example, imagine that you have been told you are rubbish all of your life and then one day someone says, you are brilliant, would you believe them? I am guessing that you are thinking, "I'm rubbish"

What hypnotherapy does is to relax your mind so when the suggestion "You are brilliant"

enters your brain it goes straight into your subconscious and you are able to accept it. From then on, when you are told that you are brilliant you can accept it, allowing your confidence to grow, increasing your self-esteem and inner value.

I hope that this helps to increase your understanding of hypnotherapy. If you have any questions or would like to add to what I have said please do. I look forward to hearing from you.
